Predictable ResultsA Midwestern power plant was having significant difficulties with their coal feeder chutes due to high levels of ambient moisture, and mechanical equipment failures. These two chutes deliver the primary source of fuel and are critical for electricity production; the interruption would result in lost revenue and expensive fines.
Inland Industrial Services Group, LLC (Inland) was asked to access the situation and recommend a plan of action. To expedite the process and limit down time, plant management awarded the project to multiple contractors, Inland and a competitor.
A methodology was agreed upon by key plant personnel including the Regional Power Plant Services Manager, Safety Director and Site Supervisor.
After finalizing the plan and Safety Task Analysis, Inland engineered and fabricated special air driven agitators that could be operated with air lances in conjunction with high pressure water to loosen the coal while removing debris and obstructions. The equipment and personnel were mobilized to the job site 8 hours ahead of the competitor.
While Inland’s crew had made significant progress on the first chute with the special agitation process, the competitor’s crew had made little progress on the second chute and was asked to leave the plant. The customer awarded the additional work to Inland.
Inland cleaned both chutes in less time than estimated, Inland demonstrated that it understood the problem and came to the project with the right plan, personnel and equipment. Inland prides itself on the level of experience, drive, and commitment that is inherent in the culture and work ethic of its employees.
“Well, we won’t do that again. We’ll just call Inland and get the job done right, cost effective and fast.”
